Saliva strips: chemistry you can read

CheckStrips carry an enzyme pad that reacts with alcohol in saliva and shifts color in proportion to concentration. Swab, wait two minutes, compare against the printed scale. No power, no calibration — the trade-off is a range estimate rather than a decimal readout.

Breathalyzers: measuring breath, inferring blood

Alcohol in your blood crosses into the air in your lungs at a known ratio, so a breath sample can estimate BAC. The KeyCheck uses a semiconductor sensor — compact and affordable, great for zone-level awareness. The Pro kit uses a fuel-cell sensor that oxidizes alcohol and measures the current it produces: more specific to alcohol, more stable over time, which is why the same technology class appears in professional screening devices.

The 15-minute rule

Alcohol lingering in your mouth right after a sip reads absurdly high. Wait at least 15 minutes after your last drink (and skip mouthwash) before any test — strip or breath.

Where the AI takes over

Honest limits of every consumer device

  • Readings are estimates with a margin of error — treat them as a range, not a verdict
  • Your BAC may still be rising when you test; retest 30 minutes later before trusting a trend
  • Sensors drift: the Pro kit includes calibration for a reason
  • No consumer reading is evidential or a defense — and none of them make driving after drinking safe
